Plant shape
Most forms make a rozette because the cross section of the leaves is triangular. The var. verrucosa remains distichous.
Leaves are channelled : concave/convex. With raised tubercles, pale green or white on a green surface. Feel the surface with a finger, can you feel them? the tubercles can be almost absent in the var glabra/glauca or very numerous in the var verrucosa.
G. carinata usually produces numerous offshoots producing large clumps.
Flowers
Flowers are slender with a bend in the middle. The gasteriform part is red while the tube is greenish white with clear green strations. G. carinata has the most greenish flower of all. The flowers are between 2.5-3cm long.
The peduncle is single with flowers dispersed along its stem
Variability
Two described varieties
G. carinata var. glabra
G. carinata var. glabra
This sturdy form has almost no raised tubercles, instead the leaves aresmooth with white spots. Often with a blueish sheen.
G. carinata var. verrucosa
G. carinata var. verrucosa
This variety is distinguished from the type by its numerous raised white tubercles, in such number that the leaf surface is barely visible. It usually has thinner leaves.
This is a plant that reached Europe in the 17th century, hence the botanical drawings in the Monickx atlasses.
You may encounter it on the window sill of the ministry of silly walks or your grandmothers because it is a real tough cookie! it can withstand months of neglect and drought.
